The biggest scam by far is the requirement to check in THREE HOURS before departure. This gives you plenty of time for your retail opportunities and since you are certain to feel hungry or thirsty during those three hours, ensures you will buy food and drink at the airport's disgustingly exploitative price as well. We take sandwiches and just buy a coffee.
Take an EMPTY water bottle through the security checks, then ask at one of the bars (best to choose a less busy one) for them to fill it with tap water for free. Never had a problem.

How can it be a rip off if you do not have to buy it? We all know how the system works.
You're right in a way but what irks people is this is a new phenomena, they've realised there's extra revenue in giving you what you usually got anyway which was a reasonable chance of a choice of seat, with your partner...which in my modest flying experience of 20 years where we sometimes flew 8 times a year, it was never a problem.
It started maybe 3 years ago...we always got there early, first'ish at check in, that used to almost guarantee you a seat of reasonable choice, always together, no cost. At that time you sensed they were pushing you to pay...every flight we've taken since they've either split us up or we've had to pay.

The amount of seats on a plane hasnt changed, the amount of people on any plane hasnt changed either...it always used to work, why not now ?

Its cynical...but i suppose thats the world we live in.
It does work now. It means that the headline ticket price is less if you don't have an allocated seat, and if you're not bothered where you sit you pay less than the old standard price.
Wot he said

You only have to look at airline profitability (or lack of it) to see that nobody's being ripped off. Operating a pricing model like this does a number of things:

1) It allows the savvy traveller to mix and match and pay for exactly what they want to get, be that food, reserved seating, express check in, baggage, whatever

2) It allows the airline to attract in punters by offering a low up front price on internet search sites

The airline industry is a tremendous success for people who want to travel. Go back 50 years and see how much it would have cost in real terms to fly anywhere. Massively more expensive. So long as you don't get suckered in by a low up front fare and lose sight of the real cost, buying a flight ticket has never been cheaper or more accessible

Who, me ?
There's a potential flight safety issue with splitting up families on board. If there is a need for an emergency evacuation, the idea is that everyone gets off ASAP. If Dad is sitting 6 rows ahead of Mum and the cherubs, is he really going to just get off and leave them, or is he going to try and make his way back, against the flow to get to them?

Disaster waiting to happen if you ask me.

Happens regularly on some flights.

I still haven't forgiven Mr R for booking us on to Ryanair for our Christmas holiday on Lanzarote. On the way back, a large Irish traveller family (about 15 adults and kids altogether) were on our flight. The kids were all seated separately from the parents and were totally obnoxious throughout the flight. It got to the stage where the flight crew threatened to have the police waiting at the gate when we got back.

Sounds like a disaster to me.

99,999 times.....Dad gets a bit of peace and quiet on the flight
1 time.....Dad can't help in event of evacuation

I like those odds

I usually try and keep my kids quiet on flights. However seeing as they're not liked anyway, next time I'll let them get on with it.

In between here and there
Still at least flights are non smoking - I am a smoker and I used to never choose the smoking part, you could cut the air with a knife. I used to plead not to be with my Mum and Dad in smoking not really for that reason but lets just say the liked a drink, makes a 9 hour flight feel like 24 hours cringing at your parents (topping up with the in flight drinks with duty free) and hoping the cabin pressure will take its toll and they will be asleep soon!!

Children should go in the hold - along with the other pets...
Or on a separate plane. Or preferably not at all.

I don't have long to go until children become pointless. The people who will pay for my retirement have already started work so another 10 years or so......

In 2013 for various personal reasons my holiday was delayed until August. My usual flights to Crete went up from around £100 each to over £500. Why can't the people with kids "see the UK before they go abroad" (that's what my mum and dad did to me)
It's probably cheaper to take the kids out of school during term time than pay the extra during school holidays. That'll explain why there were so many British kids in Tenerife a couple of weeks ago.

Yes but what these selfish parents don't understand is that if they continue to take their kids out of school for holidays air fares across the year will rise punishing the rest of us.
