Portuguese regulations stipulate that bicycles may not be carried at the rear of a car, but they can be carried at the rear of a motorhome or caravan, provided that they do not extend beyond the width of the vehicle or more than 45cm beyond its length.

Just been watching this program .

If driving with a bike be warned in Portugal it is illegal to carry the bike on a carrier on the back of the car.
WOW.................I have no intentions of actually going to Portugal but I imagine there have been lots of Brits caught out by that. What a disaster that could be.........halfway down portugal with £1000 worth of bike on the back and no room in the car..........then you get pulled:eek:

Not sure I'd trust a boot rack driving all the way to Portugal.
How do Portuguese regulations make this a Rip-Off Britain thread, out of interest?

I think it's an observation based on something out of "Rip Off Britain Holidays" which the OP felt should be shared... Is that right?

Not intended to say that Portugal is a rip off.

Your link is to a company that sells towbar cycle carriers - and they say 'it's OK'. Most hits say the same: it's not legal, making no mention of a towbar mounted carrier being OK. Just saying. I don't KNOW definitively, do not read Portugese, and I just hoped you might be able to bring some authority to the chat ("a copper told me tow bar carriers are fine").
