I am a UK distributor for 2 USA tool companies, I get a reasonable discount but this and more is swallowed up by carriage etc. People see the USA price divide it by the exchange rate and expect to pay that, many even want a discount. For small volume distributors like myself it is not very profitable, I do it nowadays more as a service to old customers.

Anyone wanting a look. www.deltakits.co.uk. This is not an advert as there is nothing on that site anyone on here is likely to buy. Now my other sites, no that would be wrong.

With American made basses and guitars the difference is astounding, I once worked out it would be cheaper for me to fly to America and buy the bass I wanted brand new than it was to buy it second hand in the UK.

I bought a Cannondale road bike in Nu Joisey USA and bought it home on the plane (hold not overhead), saved nearly 50%, mind you that was about 15 or so years ago.

Ok Christmas has reared it's head ,and now is the time to ask, what would you like as a pressie.
So one of our girls has asked for some money towards the Apple i pod touch 5th generation 64gb.
So just now i have googled for info, two sites i looked at one in US of A and one here in GB ,soddin cheek America the thing is $399 or £248 + a few pennies, here in Argos it's a staggering £329.It's a shocking mark up.
Should have marked it as a gift.

It doesn't always work. Goods can be witheld while Customs and Excise ask sender and recipient about the the nature of the transaction and their relationship.

Get your story sorted first.

It's not always caused by mark up. Our VAT accounts for 20% of the purchase price.

Cautionary tale: I asked my brother in Michigan to buy me an HID light with Li-Ion battery because it was much cheaper in the USA. By the time he had posted it and I had paid the import duty it ended up costing me EXACTLY what I'd have paid for it from the UK distributor.

I bought Gibson basses of American eBay and used a freight forwarding address in Florida (as most sellers wouldn't ship abroad) and doubled my money on uk eBay. It was a great earner until I got a HUGE bill from HMRC!

She might get a egg box instead.

Or an Egg Box 360!

I would prefer to be ripped off living in this country rather than living in the USA with cheaper goods. Then again we are getting more and more American"ised" or so it seems to me.

By the same token, the Yanks are getting more Anglicised and as the spoken word is often thought to be a reflecting of a nations underlying morality and values it's no bad thing.

Just point out that as the world is due to end on the 21st December this year, any money spent on presents would be wasted as they'd never get to use them/play with them.
