I lost a close relative to pancreatic cancer last year. On average people live for 12 - 18 months after diagnosis. It makes you wonder what treatments are available for those who can afford it.

I often think this.

Look at the queen, her mother, other famous people and royals etc.

I know it may not always be the case, but it sure does make you think.

My grandfather also died of pancreatic cancer in his 60's.

As for Mr Jobs, R..iPiece

Truly iconic gentleman in the world of electronics, and I will think about him when I use my iPhone, iPad and MacBook. What he and apple have done for technology has been amazing.

Arguably the Henry Ford of IT - and an incomparably nicer man toboot.

Visionary is one of those words, like unique, that has become debased thru' over-use, but if there was ever a true visionary in the world of computers, Jobs was it. And he made life immeasurably better for innumerable people, all around the world. I've never owned any Apple stuff either, but the Windows I've benefited from every day of my working life was pinched from Jobs (who, let's not forget, also pinched it - from Rank Xerox. 'Good composers borrow; great composers steal'). RIP.

I believe that Steve Jobs had a rather unusual form of pancreatic cancer, which 'acts' in a (slightly) less aggressive manner than the more usual forms of the disease.

When I met my missus, she was a widow; her previous chap had died from pancreatic cancer just 6 weeks after diagnosis. He was very fit, rarely drank and was a vegetarian . . . he was only 34.

There is a guy in the States who has lived for nearly 40 years since first being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; he had gone into hospital for an unrelated operation (on his gall bladder iirc) and his pancreatic cancer was spotted and operated upon immediately.

Pancreatic cancer is a b**tard. In the early stages, pancreatic cancer usually does not present any symptoms; by the time sufferers actually feel ill, it is too late.

I'm also not an Apple user in any way but you have to admire the drive and brilliance of the man who was behind the success. A sad day for all of his family and frieinds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh. Is he the guy who's responsible for my apprentice spending all her day pissing about with her i-phone instead of looking and learning.

Or is he the guy that's partly responsible for millions of tekky kids sat around getting fat with diabetes pissing about with his gadgets.

Or is he the guy partly responsible for coming up with these overpriced gadgets for Apple fanboys who must have this stuff. You do it in white now? I'll take it, even though I've got a perfectly good black one !

Or is he the guy who encouraged the stuff I must have at any price mentality to keep up with the Jones's.

I presume this great man did all this for free because he's such a philanthropist.

I've got a MacBook. Cracked near the hinge - common fault according to hundreds with the same problem. It's only 15 months old. In the USA they've accepted it's a design flaw. Here, I'd might as well bang my head against a brick wall. I brought it up (politely) on the Macforums website and had it promptly deleted and I was banned from the site. I've been to Geniusbar - get lost. I've rung offshore helpdesk - they hung up on me 3 times. I wrote to their UK head office in Ireland (on paper - they don't have an E-mail address !!!!!). I even e-mailed Jobs............Nothing !

When I pay 4 times the price I expect it to last more than 15 months ! In a situation like this you see how the big corporate machine works.

I'm sorry the guy died but I think his vision was to take over the world for his own gain and that of his baby, Apple.

Apple sucks and so does their customer service. Save yourself a fortune and don't bother

Perhaps they were just responding to how they found you as a human being.

Yeah right - a human being who paid a grand for a piece of crap and wasn't happy. I acted like quite a reserved human being under the circumstances.

I don't know about you but I don't act all fluffy and lovely when some big company has stung me for £1k and doesn't even let me express my disappointment with it's poor quality, let alone expect to have them sort it out.

Therein lies Steve Jobs effect on people like you - he sells crap for way over the odds and people go all starry-eyed and gush over what a great bloke he is.

He certainly has some considerable talent to have such a mesmorising effect on people.

Can't see why anyone's moaning about apple stuff, no-one's forcing anyone to buy it. Parents allowing their kids to play with computers too much and get fat wasn't Steve Job's fault either.
As for the guy with the macbook with a broken hinge, if it's past warranty and you didn't take out applecare - tough titty old chum!

Steve Jobs effect on people like you
On people like me? I've made no comment about Steve Jobs or his products.
I was having a dig at your behaviour; this thread was started by someone who wanted to share their thoughts on the untimely death of a well known public figure. Whether that's an appropriate thing to do, I neither know nor care. But it's generally accepted that such threads aren't highjacked to advance other agendas.

If you have a beef about Apple Customer Care, or want to broadcast your insights into Steve Jobs as a human being, then start another thread.
