Sad news, Toots was one of my favourite musicians.

This song used to be something of an anthem at my local pub The Magazine Hotel

There was talk in Jamaica as to whether Toots or Bob Marley would be the first International star (although in truth Millie Smalls was) but because Toots had been in jail for possession of 'Ganja' more publicity/promotion was put behind the Wailers.

At least he got a song out of it,

The 'six and seven books of Moses' is a brilliant song to help you remember the order the bible goes - for pub quizzes and the like.

Sad news indeed. I've just listened to my Toots and the Maytals greatest hits compilation album, every one a belter. Now I wish I had managed to see him live. We lived in Kingston, Jamaica, when I was a "yout" 1968 to 76; and Toots tunes always evoke the best memories of that time. Sweet and Dandy was one of the first 45 rpm records I remember putting on our record player, and I can still get the distinct aroma of those overheating valves (or whatever they were!) from the record player when I hear that song. Monkey Man being another favourite. Thanks for the memories, Toots; a true legend.

Sad to hear this. He was utterly brilliant.

Funky Kingston is one of the great albums.

Louie Louie always makes me think of this movie scene...
