After feeling uncomfortable, stretched and having some shoulder ‘grumbles’ - I first went with 20 or 25mm riser bars. Then shortly after: a shorter reach / higher rise stem on my Carrera. The difference in comfort was night and day….

I would 100% rather have riser bars over flipped stems - which look like a pigs ear to my eyes. There are quite a lot on AliExpress because they are fashionable at the moment; either for gravel bikes or road bikes trying to look like a poor mans Y1RS or Factor One.

You can get bars with 4cm of rise, which is really quite a lot, and done right it can look purposeful and aero rather than 'I've done my back in'.

Possibly a set of £500 Winspace Hyper2 integrated bar/stem might be overkill for a 10 year old rim brake bike, but there are considably cheaper separate bars from Balugoe, Bucklos and Kocvelo.

Yes, I use the Specialized Hover bar on two bikes. They are brill. They raise the bars by about 15mm. The comfort that they made was like night and day. In my opinion it was better opting for these than changing forks.

I use these - much neater option than flipping the stem or loads of spacers. Well worth the money
