Sorry for another what bike thread, but I want to check I am not missing anything obvious.

I am in the process of helping a friend research and hopefully buy their next road bike.

They currently have a 1980's Raleigh in 531 with Ultegra 600 gruppo and wheels.

They have a generous cycle to work budget as per the title and we have been looking at what is the best bike for them.

We had been looking at the Cube Litening Super HPC Pro, but it appears they have all been sold in the size required and none are now available to be ordered and no one has on in a 62cm.

So I wanted to ask which other bikes should be on the list of consideration?

In terms of preferences, it should be carbon and should be equipped with Ultegra or equivalent. It must be available through Cyclescheme, so that rules out some of the online only providers.

It will be used for road riding only, no trails or bridle paths, with the first milestone being the Dunwich Dynamo, so a little over a hundred miles. Most rides won't be that long, but it would nice to get something that is capable of comfortably doing the distance.

We have looked at a Felt Z series, but that has been ruled out as it just doesn't light the required fire / have the X factor.

Other possibilities / suggestions have included an Argon 18 Krypton, Scapin Blake or Olympia Ego.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to what we ought to be looking at would be gratefully received.

I wouldn't class a ride to work as a milestone, not unless I drive him in the wrong direction for a while before he sets off ^_^

@mattobrien.

Does your friend really need a 62 Cube ??

I ask because a store sales guy (& the Cube size guide) say I should buy a 60 but I have tried one & feel better on a 58, FWIW I am 6' 0' athletic-ish build with shorter legs to body differential.

Back to suggestions.

How about Canyon ? Direct from manufacturer so no distributor or retailer margins & a very high spec quality product from this German brand.

Or something that makes me drool - Fondreist TF3 1.2 from northantsbikes. Italian lesser spotted loveliness.

@SteCenturion yes a 62cm is the right size, he was all measured up at LBS.

Canyon was something that we both considered but sadly Cyclescheme says no. They say it is about supporting local businesses etc and do not do online only sellers, including Canyon. I suspect there may be other reasons behind their decision...

I will take a look at the Fondreist, thank you.

Just read a glowing review of the 2014 Argon 18 Gallium Pro in Cyclist magazine.

Out of price range with frameset alone £2099 but they look to produce very good products.

A Krypton or 2013 Gallium (standard not Pro) might be a very good purchase.
