I've never had an issue with any type of brake pads on my road bikes when using alloy rims. Even the cheap generic ones that often come with a new bike have worked fine if the brakes were set up properly. Anyone complaining about braking with alloy rims should try carbon rims in the wet and then you'll never complain about braking on an alloy rim again!

I've always found that the longer my brakepads last, the less time my rims last.... would prefer the pads to wear.
Never had a problem there the rear rim (front is still OK) lasted circa 14,000miles iirc my 105 pads lasted 9000 miles of that, the pair of koolstops only lasted 1500 miles and two swisstop lasted less than 1200 and the latter wore out the rim ;)
