I'd advise you to persevere and expect new skills/abilities to come gradually. A new activity will hurt and be a bit uncomfortable to start with. Ease into it. Maybe do a bit of practicing in a car park or somewhere (looking behind you, starting and stopping). My suggestion is to read the book "Cyclecraft" to help you build road riding confidence. (Others may differ in choice of reading, I know)

I was actually thinking I needed to move the saddle forwarded so as not to have to over stretch. Thinking having arms slightly bent with elbows out rather than straight would help.
What you need to do is get your saddle height/setback set up right fisrt then look at your reach/drop to the bars by changing stem /angle and height .It sounds daft but putting the saddle to far forward can put more weight on your arms .
