There is a massive choice in your intended price range, any of the big name brands such as Trek, Giant, Specialised etc will have good quality machines. Best find a decent local shop (Preferably through recommendation) and go and have a talk to them.

If you post whereabouts you live, chances are someone on here can recommend a good local bike shop.

buy a good used planet x on ebay for that money .... you will find one with an ultegra groupset if you are patient

A few folk I know picked up Cannondale CAAD's in that price range and having seen them in action I consider them good VfM.

Literally hundreds. Best bet is to walk into a couple of bike shops and take a look.
