I recently bought a mounting bike to go back and fore to work, and as i would be using a cycle track for it i though a mountain bike would be ok. It has since interested me to start going for long road cycles and was just wondering if the mountain bike would do for now or would it be better to get a drop handle bar.

It'll be fine to start with but for maximum speed and excitement on the road you'll probably end up wanting a road bike. If you haven't already, put some slick tyres on the mtb and make sure you run them at decent pressure. The difference between slicks and knobblies is huge on tarmac.

Welcome.

As MM said, road tyres will make a huge difference for a small outlay. If your bike has suspension then adjust it to be as stiff as it will go.
I started on a MTB with slicks, and the time I knew I had to get a road bike was when I was spinning away in top gear with plenty of go left in my legs, but no way of converting it to speed.
