What are people's thoughts on fans chalk / paint messages on the roads at bike races?

I had thought about taking some chalk with me to the olympics road race on Saturday, but when I cycled up to Box Hill last night I saw that a few people have already been quite busy with a can of spray paint. Some looked quite good, I'll try to upload some pics later, but others just looked a bit tacky.

Is writing in chalk considered ok?

We did for Delzeqq's birthday on Ditchling Beacon a couple of years back.

In Spain recently I saw this rather over-elaborate metal plate directed towards Alberto Contador...

...it translates to "Stop Cock" which is exactly what the UCI said to him.
