i was driving along a narrow country lane yesterday in my car when I came up behind 2 cyclists riding 2 abreast meaning to squeeze past would be uncomfortably close to the outer cyclist.

I slowed down and sat behind......for around half a mile!

At that point a car came along from the opposite direction and the outer rider instantly moved into single file staying so long enough for me to then pass

Bad road manners from the cyclist or well within his rights?

Bad manners. Do as you would be done by.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. I waited till they moved and it was safe to pass. No drama, no fuss, no inconvenience, no swearing, no shouting.

They had no idea I was there whatsoever, but that is not an excuse to endanger them.

Short beep of your horn probably would have done the trick. It is against the law to ride two abreast here in my state. I don't think it is strictly enforced unless they are holding up traffic and even then I doubt very many cops around here are aware of the law.

How do you know?

Absolutely no rearward shoulder checks as I approached, or glances back when I was behind them, also no mirrors. An oncoming vehicle caused them to go single file, I then passed them, and they only noticed I was there then when one of them looked before assuming two abreast mode once the car had passed.

I think that's probably the point, was it ignorance in a disrespectful way to others, ignorance to the Highway Code or simply shocking bad road observations/safety?
Whilst I waited for them to sort themselves out many wouldn't effectively endangering the cyclists safety

Another point I noticed on that particular drive was the amount of cyclists now donning a complete head to toe of black unreflective clothing.

I suppose I just want people on bikes to be safe and it's quite concerning when they place more emphasis on others to do that for them than they do themselves

I'm not defending them Big Nick they may have just been ignorant, however they may have been doing it deliberately in order to control you. I have a section which I travel along on a very regular basis it's around 1.5mile long and ranges between single lane, lane and a half and has passing places too. If I have a car coming towards me on a single lane section I'll make them stop even if it means me stopping in the middle of the road, if it's a lane and a half bit I'll make them slow or stop, as long as I'm controlling what they do I'll then go past them. However if they're approaching from behind I'll hold them there on both the lane and lane and a half bits then move over when I reach a passing place. I can't trust them not to hammer past me really closely if they're approaching from behind so do my best to make sure I'm in control not them.
