The winter bike discussions has got me thinking about mud guards. I suppose if it's raining then they cannot help that much

I've seen these posted here before

They help in the sense of only really getting rain water on you, as opposed to road water (and all of the grime that contains). You will still get wet though, just not as dirty.

ive got them, they are a faff to fit but once on are ok, clearance is tight with 23 tyres and I believe other posters have had trouble with wider tyres.

The Cruds are for bikes without proper clearance and mounting points. If your bike will take them, it's better to fit proper guards. Otherwise the Cruds are a bit of a faffy compromise. My commuter has proper guards on full time. I also have a racing bike and a set of Cruds in the shed, the two shall not be coming together.

+1. Got them on my Felt, and even with 23s the clearances are tight, with occasional slight rubbing - not enough to cause a problem, just enough to be annoying. They work ok'ish, much better than nothing at all, but if your bike has mudguard eyelets and sufficient clearances you'd be miles better off with proper guards.

Just fitted Portland Design Works Full Metal Fenders to my fixed. They don't need special fixing points, coming with mounts that fit quick release axles, and a neat solution for the rear brake bridge. They don't rattle, and look pretty good IMHO (and now I've done it, I wonder why I went for so many years with a wet a**e, must be getting old)

If not PDW, Raceblade Longs 2015 model are good. The biggest benefit when it is really wet I find is saving your feet getting constantly getting wet from the front wheel especially through surface water.

Thanks for the responses all. It's my back that is getting dirty from all the road grime, I don't mind getting wet while riding, been getting wet for a while now when MTB'ing. Do the ass savers protect just your ass?

SKS raceblades are better, or you could buy an ass saver if all you're worried about is a dirty back.
Are these quick to take on and off. Would be nice to fit them as and when needed. It's not great getting a wet bum and back in the first 5 minutes if a long ride.
