Though the pass was totally unacceptable, I have to say that had the cyclist not banged on the car it probably wouldn't have escalated. I've been in a similar situation with close passes, and the last thing on my mind is taking one hand off the bars to hit a moving vehicle. You can't preach about safety whilst at the same time filming yourself reacting to twattish driving by hitting someone's car.

I've google this, and all the news reports have just watched the youtube video and read the accompanying text. No one has (bothered to look?) found the court case, charges, names etc etc. We have no idea what he was charged with, and what his defence was. Or if it actually went to court at all. It's not even clear if the uploader of the video owns it.
But as far as I can see, $1,500 would be a tiny fine in Western Australia for a knife offence, which goes into 10s of 1000s just for possessing an illegal knife.

There is official displeasure about knife crime, so possession with intent to cause fear of violence - brandishing the knife - will almost always result in immediate prison.
Simple possession - knife found in a suspect's pocket - can also be prison, and there is a 'two strikes' rule, a second offence carries an automatic minimum of six months.
You would be surprised at the amount of young men who have a knife in their pocket on a night out which they 'forgot' was there after helping a mate lay a carpet earlier in the day.
