Oh dear. I must admit I've done the same a few times when I've taken the chain off for cleaning. It didn't matter so much though as I use a Wippermann 808 with the excellent connex link. 2 second job to remove, 20 seconds to replace. I no longer carry a spare link/chain tool, just a spare 808 chain!

+1, always have a Lezyne multi-tool in my under-saddle bag which has all of the aforementioned on it and has been used in anger as well!

"Knock on wood" I haven't had to use it in anger, yet. One or two of the wrenches on it is also a pedal wrench, and I've also have used it to help a group that were riding a rental "pedal car." When one of their pedals fell off of it.

Had a chain break on me in the p!ssing rain. Got out chain tool, sorted it. Rolled gingerly into work (fortunately not far to go).

Tale of woe to colleagues "rant, rant ... rain ... rant, rant ... drivers giving me no space ... rant, rant ... AND my chain broke (but I fixed it)..."
Male cycling colleagues "I wouldn't know how to fix that..." <Smug fimm (female)>

Did fail by not having latex gloves with me, though. There are some in the house somewhere, I need to put a pair into my saddle bag.

I used to carry "wet napps" that were designed for cyclists. They had degreaser on them for trail/roadside cleanup. Like too many of us, I also need to throw some latex gloves into my bag, just haven't gotten around to it, yet.
