So they are going to have speed limiters fitted to cars which can be over-ridden by drivers.

it's not a governed speed, it's a speed cap, if you never hit 30mph on your way to work, it won't affect you

Override button on steering wheel. Nothing a bit of sticky tape or gum couldn't defeat.

Can't see why it would be needed, think overtaking was mentioned. But surely if you have to override th speed limiter to overtake, then the vehicle in front must be at or close to the speed limit anyway so you would gain?? And if trying to justify a burst of speed to overtake a much slower vehicle (like a bike...) quickly to avoid oncoming traffic then surely it isn't safe to overtake anyway.

I do feel in some way some kind of limitation will be metred out for cars in the future. As humans ARE NOT the best at 100% avoidance of crashes etc...

And then when all the cars, busses, coaches, lorrys & vans are controlled and 'made safe' who's next?

Perhaps we will eventually see horses, dogs and cats fitted with some kind of governor to make them nice and safe! (Bikes, cycles, scooters, skateboards will have been done by then!!)

No, but once you have made safe all the 'dangerous' stuff other things will need attention and become 'dangerous'.

The more control a government has, the more it needs to stay in control.

Also, how many people die from obesity or health/inactivity related diseases each year??? I guess the problem (for the government propaganda ministry) is that it is (at the moment) hard to tax food/inactivity (even though it kills huge amounts each year) - cars are a nice easy target.

Cars aren't so much a nice easy target, but a very deserving one. Cars, or rather irresponsible drivers, kill 3,000 people a year, injure a 100 times more, and cause a vast amount of damage and unpleasantness, as well as encourage obesity and poor health.

Don't get me wrong, I love driving my car, but I'm also very aware of the responsibility I hold whilst driving it. And I hate seeing "poor put upon motorists" rubbish posts such as have appeared on here regularly. It's the worst kind of blindness and social irresponsibility.

I think a sense of proportion wouldn't go amiss here, there isn't a nanny state government conspiracy to control our lives: Governments have actually been extremely reluctant to take serious action on road safety, which is why they are still permitted to cause death and injury on such a large scale while stringent regulation has been applied to deal with industrial accidents.

Interesting that you should highly obesity and inactivity given that one of the main reasons parents don't let their children walk or cycle to school is fear of speeding traffic...
