Ahhh that's better. Just got back from the dentist after the initial treatment of a root canal filling and abscess. Excruciating pain since Sunday, and irregular, previously unexplained splitting headaches for the last two months should hopefully come to an end. I'll spare you (most of) the gory details, but the relief from the pressure of the abscess after it discharged through the drilled hole in my tooth made the visit to the dentist worthwhile all on its own.

I bet it drilled a HOLE in your wallet, too!

My dental bill for things done in the spring came to about £800 - that'll do for the rest of my (long) life, hopefully!

abchandler, when I had an abscess the dentist also drilled an hole. Which got blocked by food and the pain started again. Infact it got so bad I actually colapsed in the street!

There's a temporary dressing in place until end Jan. I'll keep monitoring the pain levels though, so thanks for the warning

Poor you, I know how much stuff like that can hurt - I hope it stays better.

Tell us when you've had your final appointment and I'll tell you the truly horrible story of my root canal adventures. Until then avoid all films with dentists in, especially Marathon Man.

I'm not going to say what happened when my dentist poked my painful tooth with a sharp instroment, asking if it hurt! Quick as anything I bit him, HARD on one of his fingers, drew blood *snigger*

Ooops! I just said.... Oh well

I had to have an abcess taken care of - at the same time, the tooth removed. I'm dentist-phobic. I *loathe* going to the dentist. I shake, get all cold/hot/go light-headed and have an urge to do violence to the dentist... (I've managed to control that last one over the years...).

To undergo the process, I had to have heavy sedation requiring the presence of a consultant anesthe... gasman, specialist nurse and a 'more qualified' dentist for want of the right terminology.

Total cost to my pocket - zilch.

The NHS can, indeed, be wonderful at times.

Coincidence! I've just had a root canal done today, to match the one I had done two weeks ago.

Hopefully that will prevent another abcess; the last time I had one there was so much pressure that the antibiotics meant to calm it down made no difference. So I asked the dentist to drill it out. He jumped back when the drill broke through. It was all a bit messy, but like abchandler, there was instant relief.

It's nice having dental work without anaesthetics too.

You remind me of the situation a friend of mine found herself in when she went to work after being told by the hospital that a lump in her breast was almost certainly benign, but they'd do a test. She was told by a colleague that the hospitals always lied and she almost certainly had cancer. Fortunately, she hadn't.

Root canals, oh the gory stories, here's mine:

When I got twotted off my bike both my front teeth were shattered, on one the damage was so extensive that the root died. In order to mount my new crowns the dentist had to drill out the entire damaged root then hammer a stainless spike into my skull to act as an anchor for the prosthetic. He used a pair of pliers and what looked like a toffee hammer to get it in.

Fortunately there was no pain but the sound your skull makes when something metallic is hammered into it is grusomexx(
