Similar experiment at RHS Garden Wisley. The roses pruned with petrol hedge trimmers performed better (floriferously) over the formally trained specimens.
We have a fern in our garden that I used to take the lawnmower to each winter and it just grew back better than ever each year. Our lass then decided to extend the bed and I can't get the mower at it any more, it's still there but doesn't look as good as when I used to scalp it.
