Does anyone else on here work a job with rostered holidays? If so, how do you find tehy affect your life? I've just changed jobs after 19.5 years at the same place and we had fully-floating holidays there i.e. take holiday when you needed it as long as you could get cover. Due to manning cutbacks and possible closure I took redundancy and started with a different company in the same line of work but who operate rostered holiday for their shift staff. Built in to this roster is a long break (19 days) in summer and a 25-day break in alternating years. Now, the 19-day break doesn't always fall within the school summer holidays, and due to a cockup with the shift pattern planning back in 2010 the 25 day break doesn't evenly roll around the shifts each year but for the next four bounces back and forth between two of them. In teh next four years I only get two summers where I get a long-ish break in the school holidays and this year will mark the first time I haven't been able to take a decent length summer holiday since my son was born nearly thirteen years ago.
How unusual is this? Ought I to give it a year and see how I feel then (only been here three-and-a-half months)? Ought I to just shut the hell up and be grateful I've got a job?
