Planning on going next summer with my daughter who'll be 13 and not sure she'd do the distance in one day (not without loads of moaning anyway). So I'm looking to stop overnight midway.....maybe Leiden area? Any recommendations of a cheap b&b? Thanks.

Also, if we wanted to get the train from the Europort to Rotterdam centre to save 20 miles of (I imagine not pleasant) biking do we need to book tickets in advance or can we turn up and get on?

how are you getting there ?
The Harwich to Hook ferry drops you off just before Rotterdam, so the route is up the coast for a few miles and avoids Rotterdam completely

I live nearer Hull than Harwich so I'd been thinking of going from Hull. Hull ferry goes to Rotterdam.

The route from Hook looks nicer though. I can be in Hull in about an hours train ride. I'd have to drive to harwich, probably only a couple of hours and I am starting to be tempted to do this instead. Plus the ferry's cheaper!

The ride from Hoek is an easy one day ride: get off the ferry turn left; keep going up the coast; turn right at Haarlem until you hit Amsterdam. Even cycling from Europort, I don't think you need to go anywhere near downtown Rotterdam (unless you want to): it would add about another 20km onto the ride from Hoek.

You don't need to book tickets in advance on the train: just remember to ask for a bicycle ticket with your regular ticket (about 6 EUR at the moment, I think).
