So, 5 of us have planned to ride the IOW tomorrow, early start 0630 down to the coast for 70 miles in a forecast of heavy rain twixt 10:00 and 16:00...
What would you do, go and be epic, or wimp-out for a lie-in?
I've asked the other 4 for a vote ....

I'm just glad I had perfect weather there three weeks ago. The IoW is a pretty hard ride in optimum conditions.

Can I have your kit if you don't make it back?

I was going to go out for a 100km Audax today. I'm so glad I didn't what with the bouts of heavy rain and the accompanying misery.

Stay in bed. Relax. Read a seed catalogue and your porn of choice, in my case, Railway Modeller.

Of course you can have my kit, it needs new Chainrings and re-cabling. There's a brand new cassette and Chain in the Garage, ask the Mrs.

I've done the IOW a few times, including in te rain, so I'm hoping we'll be fine, but I could have done with a more restfull week and weekend ..... I'm knackered!

So long as it's warm and you keep moving you'll be fine! Anyway, by my reckoning if you start at 10am you should be done by 2.30pm at the latest - that's based on my own riding style which is 15+ mph average on a ride of that length (I could go all day at 15mph!), and I never stop en-route (except to fix any dreaded p****ures).

It's a bit more complicated than that...
The one and only time we've done the Isle of Wight we set out from the ferry at 9am and got back at 6:30pm. The wind was so strong along the seafront at the end that we were struggling to reach the dizzy heights of 8mph on the flat.

A couple of weeks later we discovered part of the reason we were slow - the rear tube we were using had a slow puncture and was too big for the tyre.

(The other parts of the reason apart from the wind? We were on a tandem and neither of us was particularly used to hills.)

Good luck Fossy.

I cycled round IoW in 1989. It took me 24hrs!!

But i camped and had a little scramble round the cliffs at Alum Bay.

Well the suns out a few clouds and the odd shower and a light breeze over here so looks like they might get a good ride.

The Island always has its own micro-climate IME and usually better than the mainland.

If folks want to do the ride the Isle of Wight Randonee in the spring is the one to do. About 2,000 riders and great cake stops all the way round at the check-points. Big lunch stop at Bembridge School. There is a BHF one in the Autumn but its poorly organised IME and no catering set up so its bring your own or hunt a cafe/pub. About 70 miles and 4,000ft of climbing for the loop with a whole range of different scenery from rolling hills to dramatic sea cliffs.
