I was looking at my child's Map of the World last night, and thinking that, were it not for all the things that stop me from doing so, it'd be nice to take a world tour , which led to wondering what route I might take.

I'd head east first I think, that seems most logical - so from here (Yorkshire) I suppose I'd head to Hull, then to Holland, then bimble through western Europe - but then you get to a whole load of places I'm not keen to go and the Foreign Office aren't keen on you visiting either - the Ukraine looks dangerous to the east and I certainly wouldn't fancy the Turkey - Iran route. But once you got past that it seems the FO think almost everywhere in South America is dangerous, and loads of places in East Asia, like parts of the Phillipines, bits of Malaysia, some of Papua New Guinea. And it seems that you can't get through Africa without passing through some hot spots wither. I couldn't find a route - no matter how circuitous, that I'd be happy to follow.

If you had the time, money and lack of commitments, is it something you'd consider, and if so, what route would you take?

I'd zigzag a bit and use transport to get past the dodgy places.
East to Germany, back through France, down to Morrocco. Prob Tunisia then fly to Italy. Cycle round to Greece. Down to Yemen. Fly to Pakistan. Through India and SE Asia down to Malaysia. Over to Australia. Fly to Argentina. Cycle north. Fly back from Canada.
Sorted :okay:

Edit - I'd want to get back to Poland too on thinking about it. Fab country. So east from Germany to Poland and then back through France.

Across western Europe, down the Balkans, Turkey, Azerbaijan, ferry across the Caspian to Turkmenistan, then Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, to start with.
The FO thinks almost everywhere is dangerous, but don't forget that the UK, France, Germany, Belgium have a "High" risk of terrorist attack, with attacks highly likely - so by FO standards staying local is dangerous as well.

It's funny, one little line through a country and its "done".

So I mentioned the idea the other week about every British county in a logical zig zag south to north fashion, from there a ferry to Scandinavia working down into the main lump of Europe. Head to France, taking in every region, then Spain & Portugal. Straight line to Italy.... do the regions there....

So in short, sticking to the safer places in the world, but see a bit more of what there is.

That would be a perfect plan if there were ferries to Scandinavia any more
You'll have to modify your zigzag to end up at Hull or Harwich, and then a ferry to Holland

How about a more northerly route through Asia? From Poland to Russia via the Baltic states or Belarus. Then cross Russia to China via Kazakhstan or Mongolia.

That's a hell of a lot of flying hassle hopless.
I rather fancy the idea of cycling to China, partly because I really like the idea of traversing so much of the world without getting me or my tubes on a plane. What concerns me though, and why I'm so interested in this thread (thanks kneesup) is the few hotspots and the visa hassles of certain places. I did a bit of wandering in communist eastern europe when younger and visas were a bit of a hassle then.

PS - I'd also like to use a route avoiding Uzbekistan - I don't like the sound of its government at all. I realise that nowhere is perfect and that there are shades of "not nice" but I used the same principle in my eastern europe wanderings, hence I very deliberately avoided Ceascescu's Rumania, even if he didn't overly worry the Queen, or to be fair to her, the Brit Government. Now of course I can get to Rumania easily and with a free conscience and it sounds fascinating/really nice, particularly in the countryside.

Interesting though have heard bad things about road/traffic conditions in Russia for cyclists. Anyone got any views?

If I even broached the idea of cycling through Russia, Mrs C would veto it, she's seen too many YouTube dash cam videos.
