very bad technique.

When i was learning to drive, my instructor gave me severe bollockings for not slowing fro roundabouts even if i could see than to be clear.

Would you be happy for a car to do the same to you??!!
Fair point. Its just that if I saw a cyclist doing the same, I would just think to myself that if he did indeed pull out, the only person who would get hurt is him. The same is with me. I am certain that I will be able to stop in time and if I were to just pull out, I would expect some bollocking from cars that are already on the roundabout.

what about the nervous driver who does an emergency stop on the roundabout, thinking you ar going to ride out in front of them, and someone runs into the back of them?

The it is the person behinds fault. You are supposed to leave a 2 second gap so that the person in front can do an emergency stop and you will have the time to stop without hitting them. For all intensive purposes, rear-end cases are always the cars behinds fault for following too closely.
