I cycle from Boldon to Ashbrooke in Sunderland every day and Addict's route is the one I would use too, except I would avoid the Wheatsheaf roundabout. When you get to the Toyota garage turn right then left http://goo.gl/maps/6oMYW and go past the Stadium of Light. Follow the road through Sheepfolds and it will bring you out onto the Wearmouth Bridge. From here you can go down John Street then up past Mowbray Park and the Civic Centre to Hendon. There's a lot of construction work going on where Sunderland Bowling used to be and it's all a bit of a mare for the forseeable future.
I usually have a tailwind along past the dogtrack on a morning and ALWAYS have a headwind home, but it's downhill so it's not so bad.
You were right Carol, I had a cross/tail-wind down the coast road and past the go track.
The return journey was hard work.

I missed them by the skin of my teeth, it was pelting down at 4:50 but by 5:00 it was easing off so by the time I got changed and left work it had almost stopped, the sun came out as I cycled along the coast and it was really rather lovely, although I did have cold ears! I am seriously thinking about some earmuffs for the winter.

I missed it too. There was a big black cloud over my house as i left for work at about 1630. A huge clap of thunder followed and i got that sinking feeling. But i seemed to be just behind it all, so just got a soaking from road spray.
Total change by the time i turned on to the coast at Roker and headed back towards Shields. Looking forward to a chilly ride home in the morning.
