want o plan your route, check how far you just travelled , well without buying a gps kit here,s a website you can go on plan your route , record it and get a list of directions from for future rides
ok its another riders site you have to log into, but is free.

I use it as most of my routes have big chunks of off road involved, rac routefinder even set for walking doesn,t do it, this you click on folow road - and that includes mapped tracks, then change to draw line for the totally off road bit
it gives you a cross section of climbs and desents (which is frigning - did I climb up that !)
its very america based but gives uk and europe maps - planned my next route through france on it.
