They've discovered that it can be solved fromany position in 20 moves or less.

That beats my 30 year old personal record of 435,984 before I threw it at the wall.

cool, I learned to do this last year, my best is around 1min 40secs, probably over 100 moves

there are world records under 8 seconds on youtube, crazy speeds

I used to be able to solve it as a teenager when they first came out, don't think I could now though!

The kids at school who were really into doing it in the fastest times, used to take the cube apart and put butter on the internal parts (oo er missus) to speed things up.

Basically it is a maths equation and as long as you know it, it can be solved relatively easily. Studying the cube before hand and then solving it can produce fast times.

I used to be able to do it several years ago but i was never very fast. Around the 4min mark

I used to be able to do it in about 2 mins ... I suspect I could muddle my way through to complete it but no where near as fast...it was just a case of knowing which moves moved which squares.

I first picked up one of these when they first came out - in the 1970s I think it was. And I soon learnt the solution: I think I could usually manage it inside the minute. I also acquired the "Rubik's Revenge" version: 4x4x4 - but surprisingly it didn't need any new techniques compared to the 3x3x3 one, although it obviously needed longer in time, and the cube was less robust.

Sadly, both cubes fell apart - irreparably - after many many hours of twisting and turning this way and that. And I never got any replacements. After so many years, I'm sure I'd have to re-learn it all from scratch. I can still remember some of the jargon from the solver's armoury: "tumbles", "jelly rolls", "raspberry ripples"....

I used to be very good with it and could easily do it around a minute, but I learnt all the moves from a book and it became very simple when you knew how. Sadly I lent my book out and as usual never got it back again. These days I would not have the faintest, maybe do one side.

One of my kids could do it, but they owned up eventually that they just pulled the stickers off and restuck them down whilst I was out.
