I find that shaking a fist and saying, in a slightly raised voice, 'you sir are an absolute shower' to be jolly effective, certainly gets some caps doffed and mumbled apologies from the lower classes. If there's no reaction I have my manservant administer a sound thrashing.

My main use of the V sign is after a lorry has overtaken too close - in the faint hope that the driver might look in his mirror and see it. No reaction to date... (apart from me giving a sheepish wave to a little old lady in a following car who had seen my arm-waving!)
