Rust protection advice

On changing the chainrings, noticed quote a lot of paint worn off where the chain must have got caught.

It's bound to happen again, so painting it isn't really a solution.

Anything worth applying to limit corrosion?

I would paint it and sort out your shifting. The buzz weld stuff is good but you'll scratch it off if you keep dropping the chain.

Let it rust and then apply Jenolite Rust Converter. It will leave a hard dark blue surface that won't rust again.

re. "Stop the problem" - there's no current problem; the pic is from replacing the chainrings. The damage is from previous owners, I think, though it's possible we've done some of it - IME occasional tangles in that area are inevitable.

After damaging my chainstay (not as bad as yours) because of chainsuck that took me time to sort, I abraded/cleaned the steel and then painted over with black https://www.toolstation.com/hammerite-metal-paint-smooth/p83379 paint. Still there several 10000s/years later.
