Flew with Ryan Air the other day. They were fine. Flights were reasonably on time. It's easy to not pay any additional fees. Certainly, some people were charged £35 to put their 'hand luggage' underneath as it was too big for hand luggage...but Ryan Air hardly hid the dimensions that they must be within. So fair enough.

We flew with this airline from Jo'burg to Durban and it was such a refreshing experience. On boarding we were told just to find somewhere to sit, no preallocated seats, the safety briefing was relaxed, full of jokes and it was clear that the flight team really enjoyed their jobs. Pity UK airlines are still stuck in the 1920's.

+1, for a country famed for it's humour we should have started this with the whole "Easy Jet" type experience.

Could be worse.

To be fair, Easyjet (we've done a lot of Easyjetting) are reasonably up-front about the 'hiddens' - you book in hold luggage (at extra cost) in advance, and you know exactly how much you're in for before you type in the credit card bit. Where they fall down on is punctuality - we've had a lot of delays with EJ flights. And that silly 'priority' boarding rip-off which we've never subscribed to - all it means is that you get called to board the plane sooner, so you spend longer sitting on the aircraft and less time sitting in the terminal. You don't get there any sooner!

Don't know about Ryan Air, avoided them because they're not so well placed for us. But I've heard some of the horror stories.
