this is absolute nonsense, the instance was Ryanair to Madrid bad weather diverted them to Barcelona were they were holding for nearly on hour, when the low fuel warning kicked in causing Ryanair to request an emergency landing.. plus Ryanair have a very good, if not excellent safety record.

easyjet and another airline also requested emergency landings...
I just went by the BBC news.

I don't fly sleazyjet either. I tried it once, never ever again.

it's well for those who can afford to fly with whichever airline they want, for the rest of us they are a cheap, reliable option, and have offered me and the rest of the great unwashed the opportunity of affordable European travel...
thanks. I'll walk

I rarely fly, but I remember being in a Queazy A319 as it took off, and the noise from the engines didn't sound too healthy (they sounded like they were being strained. I sat there, listening to this as the ground outside got smaller before disappearing below cloud, and I seriously started to wish I was somewhere else), so I haven't flown with them since. Silly really as we all got there in one piece without any problem, but, still.

As for Ryanscare, I wouldn't use them now either, not because of any safety concerns, just out of principal.

I was so unenamoured of Ryanair when I tried them that getting a train to Sicily was preferable.
Handy Hint.
It's a very, very long train journey to Sicily.
But you do get to go on a boat while still on a train, which is unusual.

Do you? How and from where and with who?

I've not been to Sicily by train but I have been to Florence by train and it was great. St Pancras to Paris, quick walk across town (not forgetting to buy baguettes, cheese and nice wine), Paris to Florence. It does take about 18 hours but it's the only way to travel.

I found this about it all, looks very exciting but also looks like its days might be number and we might need to do sooner rather than later!

I dislike Ryanair but when push comes to shove if they go where you want to go, and they're cheap, one swallows one's personal dislike of O'Leary and his tactics.
I don't mind O'Leary or his tactics particularly. Ryannair fulfils a market and as he quite rightly says if you don't want to fly like this for this price, fly with someone else. It is a market I don't particularly want to play in and I'm happy to pay that bit extra to fly with Easyjet or Aer Lingus who offer a far better service. From recent experience I'd say that, in the short haul arena, Easyjet are giving BA a run for their money now.

I won't use them. I would rather pay more and go with another airline rather than use Ryanair. I don't think that they are safe, they only carry just enough fuel for a start.

Only enough fuel for the start ? What about the finish !

I never really get people being annoyed with Ryan Air's policies. We went, so many people getting annoyed with the checkin becuase the wouldn't allow them the extra couple of kilos. It is widely known that they have a strict policy of 15Kg. Don't get annoyed with them if your case is 17Kg and you're hopng nobody notices and you're trying to beat the system. Most airports have scales so there's no excuses of not being able to weight your baggage.

They are very cheap BEACUSE of these policies (weight is critical to fuel usage) and fast turnaround due to minimal bag check-in . It is very simple, either use them or don't. If you do, follow the rules, it's not that difficult and it's hardly a surpirse as its all made very clear.

Agreed. I think that the scramble for seats is a pain (although obviously everyone gets one) so fly with other companies.

I flew into Shannon in Ireland a few years ago on the last day that Aer Lingus flew there (they've restarted since) and rather than fly back with Ryanair I got the train across to Dublin and flew back with BA.

I'm not bothered by their charges for this, that and the other. It's all spelled out before you click 'confirm'.

This is where it isn't as simple as that. Ryanair expects its passengers to follow the rules with the threat of hefty penalties. They, on the other hand, break the rules and refuse to handle complaints fairly.

Leaving 200 people stranded at a foreign airport not of their choosing, and 100 miles away from their planned destination, is inexcusable behaviour. It's their attitude of 'fcuk you, we've got your cash' that many people object to, not baggage limitations/costs.

That's a shame

I just love sleeper trains. Mrs R is speaking at an event in Aberdeen at the end of November. I am taking the Sunday night sleeper from Euston with her and we are coming back on the Monday sleeper after the conference. I can't wait - I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I sleep like a baby on a train. It's bliss.

That is us next year come hell or high water, small people on the caledonian sleeper with or without bikes we are sleeping on a train!

Much as I like travelling by train et al, I do find the sleeper to be a bit hit and miss with me. Sometimes I sleep like a log, other times I am kept wide awake all night.

Also, DON'T travel in the seated section - It might be cheap, but there is a reason for that, you get treated like a 3rd class citizen by the staff. Its clear their priorities lay with passengers who have a bed and that you are just an irritation to them.
I genuinely have had staff being rude and arrogant to me and others before, its amazing they actually continue to get away with it! They just sneer at you for clearly being such a pleb. It might have changed now, but when I used the sleeper regularly, they didn't serve you any hot food (despite the fact that they make it for the lah de dah passengers next door who have a bed, not even any of the sandwich type things you would get normally on a Virgin service, etc. They will serve you alcohol though, presumably to subdue/placate you), and for Pete's sake, DON'T even think about trying to take a walk anywhere, they will genuinely treat you like some sort of criminal (I'm surprised they aren't armed with tazers 'just in case').

It all makes Ryanair look positively Saintly!

These days I take the train to London the night before and stay at a youth Hostel or similar. Its a lot less hassle, and you never know, you might just get some sleep too!
