Hendrix - who did astonishing things with electric guitars some 50 years ago that are still difficult to play (for evidence look at any number of 'covers' on youtube).

Had his innovation peaked or was it terminated well before he took the playing of the instrument into unimaginable realms?

I liken him to Beethoven really - way ahead of his time.

The OP is asking for sad early waste of musical talent.

Lennon, Elvis, Whitney Houston, and Eva Cassidy had long careers, albeit they would have been longer had they not died.

For 'early' you need to look at the likes of Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran, both of whom died in their early 20s.

Eva Cassidy long career? Her recognition and fame were posthumous!

Her (self released) first album was in 1996 - she died in November 1996.

Agree with you. The Hamsters had a very good try at playing him though.

Looks like she was in a band when she was just 11-years-old.

She was playing professionally throughout the 1980s and was playing until her death in 1996.

That's a minimum career length of 10 to 15 years - long in the music business.

Even longer given the records only really started to sell two years after she died.

Or put another way, she was a classic 'overnight sensation', albeit a dead one.

Scores of talented young drill musicians are killed by knife attacks on the streets of London.
If that's the result of this particular type of music maybe we can do without it.

Cliff Burton (Metallica bassist on the first three albums)
Layne Stayley (Alice in Chains)...and his bandmate Mike Starr
Jam Master Jay (Run DMC)
The Abbott brothers (Pantera)
Jeff Hannemann (Slayer)
Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys)....
Now, all of those guys- and many of the others- had recorded mulltiple albums, won critical acclaim, toured the world...but all were taken too soon. Slayer are calling it a day after 37 years, and are on their final round of touring, but Jeff should be up there on stage with them.
