May 2014, Hull are to play Arsenal in the FA Cup and the Fridays mark the occasion by cycling through the night from York to Hull. It was a pleasant, bimbly sort of a ride and towards the end I found myself Tail End Charly-ing. There was a bit of a climb just after Flixborough and my companion (I think it might have been Adrian) and I waited. We waited a bit more. I got a bit worried. A gentleman cyclist of stout build, low gears and never ending good humour finally hove into view. He didn't give a toss. He was a happy man. And he gave me a pie to sample at breakfast. Farewell Vernon.

Here he is with some of his fanclub.

The students loved him and have been remembering him fondly today. Vernon's lessons will stay with them for life.

Perhaps the memorial he'd most appreciate. RIP

Very true.

I should also add that he is a complete and utter nobber for dying. What's the point in that?

I have just been rooting through Vernon's postings.Looking for one of his pie lists.I found it after reading many of his wonderful posts. It's so unfair,he was so looking forward to doing many things in his retirement.
I have not been out on my road bike since last year.the first ride will be in memory of him.I am going to Otley,to buy and eat a pie, from a butcher in Otley suggested by him. There are many shops he had highlighted i am sure i will visit more than one in the years to come.
I will raise a pie to you Vernon many times in the coming years.R.I.P. BIG MAN.
