I met Vernon on a ride or two, and we occasionally met up for a curry and pie swap (although I once cheated and took him a brace of partridge...) Last meet was in February and we were discussing his retirement plans. He was as we all agree, a larger than life geezer, and loved the work he did. I got the impression he would have touched the lives of many students.
I think what stands out most is that everybody loved him. His tales of hospitality from strangers on his many jaunts, particularly last summer in the states were evidence of a guy you couldn't help but warm to.
Stay safe good buddy. We'll not get to share that little gift from Amsterdam you promised for my retirement either. Bugger.
