I think it's far more important to get a saddle that actually fits you correctly then think about how much/little padding you want/need.
Any good LBS will be able to help you sizing you up i would think.
I was in agony for a fair few trips of 20-30 miles then took my own advice & found my saddle was the wrong size, changed it to the next size up & the very next ride i did was 52 miles & i did'nt even think about my butt....which has gotta be a good thing !

Of course, decent shorts do help massively aswell i.m.o.

Good luck anyway.

I think you also need to consider your position.
I have never managed to be really comfortable on my mountain bike, despite the suspension, but on my road bike don't get sore. I think this is mainly due to weight distribution on road bikes.

Thanks I think I will try LBS maybe they can help me with correct fit. Thanks to everyone's that took the time to reply :-)

I went from a softish saddle to a hard one. Soft one was ok on 20 mile runs but got increasingly more uncomfortable at higher mileages. Tried Chamois cream for the first time a couple of weeks ago and for longer rides I thorougly recommend it. So for me, hard saddle, padded pants and cream.

I would agree with that.. its the fit that was important, well for me anyway.
My old saddle was 145 and after an hour it hurt but I got measured up for a saddle and found I needed a 130mm so I got myself a Specilaized Romin Expert 130mm.
Now a different ride altogether..

I read the tin foil method
Or alternatively pop into your lbs and see if they have the measuring kit

Chain stores like Evans do it.

What's the tin foil method please?
