Reading one of the 'saddle' threads in the equipment forum has just reminded me of something.
Several years ago I was working on a container ship, running between various European ports and Montreal. Winter weather can be quite nasty and this was a very bad crossing, as a result several containers were lost overboard and a few broke open. Out of one of these containers spilled bicycle saddles.
The Philippino crew gathered lots of these things up, with the logic that were there were saddles, there were bicycles. There wasn't. There were more saddles. A lot more saddles. A 40' container full of saddles.
Standing minding my own business one morning the Chief Mechanic sidles up to me and asks in his best (spiv like) philippino-english 'Piemaster, you want bicycle saddle?' and furtively pulls out from under his boilersuit said saddle.
I later discovered his stash - an old 200 litre oil drum full of saddles. God knows what he did with them all eventually, how did he get that many saddles in his hold baggage when flying back to the Philippines?
