Safely locking a bike in London

Interesting concept for people riding into London on their commute and wanting somewhere reasonably secure to lock their bike.

A new bike parking rental scheme, which allows London residents to rent a space in one of our secure Bikehangars or bike lockers for a small annual fee and key deposit.

Seems not a lot of locations currently exist, but I hope it takes off... Seems its trying to get support at the moment for the idea

Bikehangar’s and bike lockers are 'apparently' currently installed in Lambeth, Hackney and Southwark, with further installations planned in the following Boroughs, Camden, Haringey and Lewisham

Yup, LCC sent an email round to those boroughs asking that residents (Lewishame Borough, in my case) nominate places for bike hangers. I've seen them in the streets behind the Battersea power station.

Dear Supporter,
In Lambeth, the council have recently rolled out 40, Dutch made, on-street bike lockers. The lockers offer a secure option for people to park their bike. They can store 6 bicycles, and only take up the space of half a car parking bay.

Lewisham Council have expressed a real interest in placing a number of Bikehangars throughout the borough, but they want to find out where they are needed.

Do you want a Bikehangar near you? Then let Lewisham Council know where. They are interested in hearing about locations on-street or on private commercial land.

I've seen a few of these round and about Vauxhall. Clicking on the links it looks as though the scheme is for residents rather than commuters at the mo'. Really nice idea, especially for people in small flats. Having read a thread on here about a commuter looking for secure parking in Clapham Junction it seems there could be a market for that as well.

Another idea that this country is slow to catch on to. Germany have had these (and better, bigger designs) for residents for years.

Are these communal bike sheds? If so aren't you relying on other users locking it properly after they have removed their bike and not sharing the key with others?

Yes, you are relying on other people's competence to a certain extent, but that's nothing compared to your reliance on other people's competence once you're on the road. It's a restricted list of key holders and users will still be wise to lock their bikes securely inside the hangar. Think of it as a covered and locked Sheffield stand. And therefore safer.
