Thank you everyone. My last question is, to get the best deal, should I buy now, after Boxing Day or wait until February for the voucher?

As I posted above - both.
Ask the retailer if you can buy now and use the voucher later. Evans do this, plus you can buy a sale bike without an 'admin fee' that almost all other retailers will charge. I just got a 2015 bike, negotiated a discount and will be back with a voucher for a partial refund in the new year.

I have spoken to Evans but they wont play ball about the voucher... I will see if anything or offers comes up...

Weird. Well worse case buy the bike cash, then as long as you don't use it, you have 90 days to return it. You can then process again with the voucher. Evans would not hold a bike for a long time with a deposit, but they have let me buy it and then refund to buy again with voucher.

hi all,
I may have by chance found a second hand bike I am going to see tomorrow.
Can you give any tips what I should be looking out for?
It seems to be reasonably priced and in good condition.
Thanks,
Josh

Ask for proof of ownership, purchase, i.e. a receipt in the owners name. Go to the sellers home, don't meet in a pub car park

Ask about history, maintenance, when parts were last changed, when it was last serviced, how old the tyres are (have a good look at them too), have a good look over the paintwork, check for dents, cracks, scratches, look at the cassette for sharks teeth on the cogs, spin the wheels to make sure they are true etc

Use common sense really, if anything seems fishy, walk away. If going with cash, perhaps take a pal or two with you

Thanks, are bikes registered nowadays?

Also, approx how much is a service and new tires and pads?

Also how often should they be serviced?

There are databases where you could check a serial number. Bike register or immobilise I think

What bike is it? A service depends on what needs doing but around London, a basic one is around £40 (look at websites, Evans, your local shop, where are you in London?). Tyres, £20-60 a pair depending, brake pads, not sure, £10 a pair for branded ones?

I went to view the bike and the guy was genuine and also checked it with the serial number and all fine so have since registered it my self (thanks vickster for that). The bike seemed all in good working order. Hopefully no surprises to come in terms of faults.

I bought the Cannondale Synapse Sora 2015 Road Bike. It is a shame about ride to work but that's how it goes. Now to start on my cycling and technique as have plenty to learn.

Thank you everyone for all your time n help.
