I will be in Salzburg later this week, with my luggage, waiting for a train.
I recall that the station is smallish and may not have a restaurant or snack bar that will be open in the evenings.

Normally I would be happy to investigate the immediate area, but bear in mind that it will be very cold, and I will have my suitcase with me. Does anyone know which direction to set off in to find somewhere to eat please? Nothing complicated, but most preferably not a Maccy D. I will probably just miss one train, and have two hours to spare before the next one. Some people on here have said they enjoy holidays in Austria, so I thought someone on here might know something about the area.

Thank you to anyone who has a suggestion.

Yes I can, Yes I am, Yes I did...Repeat.
I've been there twice...but each time I jumped in a cab asap and got away from the station. It's an ok place though (there are much worse stations in germany/Austria)...you'll ge the the usual stand up wurst Und pommes snack bars etc...wish I could suggest a place to eat near the station, sadly all I know is the town centre near the bridge and Mozarts houses etc.
Be safe.

Oh BTW make sure you get the right ticket...Las time I went i got arrested:laugh::tongue:

 That nearly happened to me once. The person I was with had "decomposed" his ticket too many times. I had not realised how variations of "I'm very, extremely sorry, most apologetic, please excuse foreign tourists" that I knew how to say in German. Getting arrested at that point would have meant missing my flight.

I assume the ticket office will be open, or the pictograms on the ticket machines will be tested.

Best policy in that situation (for a woman anyway) would be eyelid fluttering followed by overt bribery, failing that kick'em where it hurts and leg it quick...

Er "Leg it Quick", where to, I was on a boat travelling to Luzern.

Overt bribery, think I'll pass on that one.

I've been to Salzburg loads. The train station isn't in the nicest area but I honestly think you'd be safe enough. If you come out, go left and then right on the main road, there are a number of shops/cafes etc. No idea if they're open late. Otherwise there are cafe/shop places in the station.

Hi Speicher,

I've been to Salzburg railway station many times. Depending on how long you've got there should be no problems finding food. The main bit of Salzburg is to the left as you come out of the station but it's a 10-15 minute walk. However I remember there being several food-service places around the station and I imagine they would be open.

I think there's a weird sort of inside shopping centre across the road over the square outside the station which had a Maredo or some such eatery, if memory serves me right.

I could not remember from my previous short stop at the station, what it was like. I think we will stay near the station rather than venture too far with suitcases etc. Most services run hourly, but on this ocasion, the trains are every two hours.

Thanks to you all for your advice.
