Hi,
So I’m looking to cycle from San Francisco to San Diego this summer - Assuming corona virus is under control by then! Looking to go early-mid July but that would be flexible. If anyone knows anyone perhaps planning the same trip that would like a partner or even a group that I could latch on to then please let me know so we could perhaps arrange cycling even a small portion of the journey together to keep me company. Secondly I have a few other questions about the roads: is the road mainly safe and easy to navigate, are there regular camping sites/hostels on the route one could camp on or can you simply pitch a tent on the beach/on the countryside?, also is cycling through the major cities - mainly LA easy enough to navigate. I’m from the UK so have to consider the fact I’m also having to concentrate on staying on the right hand side of the road! Cheers

Might be worth reading "Travels in a strange state" by Josie Dew.

Very jealous. I haven't done that bit, but I did San Diego to Florida, so this gives a general background into cycling in the USA https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=2sf&doc_id=20340&v=t4

Your route is very doable and the campaign options are (free?) hiker/biker sites in the State Parks. This chap did it recently and I am sure if you contact him via his guestbook he will help out https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=2sf&doc_id=22603&v=Km

Bits of LA are less attractive it seems. You also have the issue that you have to get past Camp Pendleton which is no longer permitted to non US citizens. Assuming you are not! https://www.pendleton.marines.mil/Base-Access/Recreational-Bicycling/

San Diego is lovely

It will be hot I assume but you have probably guessed that

Happy planning. Hope it comes off

Aha ye hopefully I can pull it off. Thanks for all the advice mate. Having had a look at Camp Pendleton on google maps the main gate seems to be off the main coastal road and then goes off into the countryside, so from that I assume it won’t impact my journey? If you haven an more details about going past Camp Pendleton, if I can’t go in that road is there perhaps a detour route round I can go. Cheers Josh

Have a look at the journal in my signature. I did SF to LA as the latter part of my trip. Bear in mind I did it 10 years ago though and things might have changed. I did a quick Google and it seems the hiker/biker sites have been reduced. I used the Cycling the Pacific Coast book which has been updated in 2017. The roads were reasonably quiet for me as I did it in the Autumn but will be busier in the summer.

Getting through LA was easy as the route took you along the beach front.

Wow. It's amazing enough doing that trip in a car, which I did in 2007, let alone on a bike. Lucky you.
