Not an album, but a bright ride 12" single that I've got somewhere.

I bought two thinking that they would be worth something in the future (about now)

I sometimes mumble this to myself when I'm 'pounding' up a steep incline.
I will bid you a starting £10 to smash it to bits with a BFH !

At the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, it depends what you like.

I have recently started noticing hair growing in my ears, so no great surprise that I have gone a bit jazz. Not entirely, but those are the records I'm tending to buy. Because that's the way my taste has led. Other tastes may differ.

I would say that if you want to explore what records have to offer, you pretty much have to buy second hand, because that's what the overwhelming majority of records are. But in my experience, if you're careful, you can get good things off ebay for not a great deal, and tho' you do get the occasional dud, most are fine or better. Of course that is with jazz - jazz folk tend to have decent equipment and a respect for the vinyl. Other genres may vary.

I seldom pay more than about a fiver a pop for ebay records, including delivery (I enquire about combined postage ahead, and get, eg, three records from the same seller for one p&p), and hardly any are faulty. Some may have a bit of snap crackle and pop going on in the background, but most don't. And I've never come across a scratch, apart from a couple of old records where I half expected it. And even then, nothing unplayable. Nothing that skips. And I must have bought fifty records over the last 18 months.

But like I say, what really matters is what you like. Jazz may not be your thing. It isn't most people's. If it was me and I had £20 burning a hole in my pocket I might buy this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Julian-Ca...821634?hash=item5d69ca4302:g:tloAAOSw9N1VrhOB

and this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THE-OSCAR...201575?hash=item1a1870e527:g:3wIAAOSwvg9Xc~Nk

and this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Moder...134502?hash=item464c056c26:g:SC0AAOSwq19XB835

But that's me.

You is you.

PS A decent record cleaner is essential if you're going to buy old records online. These are good.

Haven't tried ebay yet - might dip my toe. I do have a fairly wide taste in music and love a bit of Jazz - your third link (compo album) sounds good! (Excuse the pun). Might take a look for Fables of Farbus by Mingus if it's not totally rare... As for cleaning that cleaning looks pretty thorough! I have a velvet brush at the moment but could be worth getting more serious cleaning stuff.

The Band S/T or Rock of Ages, both reissued on Capitol.
Credence Clearwater Revival, any of the first five LPs are classics and are available
Elvis first LP or the second, classic 50s rock and roll, essential, great cover too, both available.

I did have, when I was younger. all of the Big Country picture/shaped discs
I think it was Fields Of Fire, that was a Scotland shaped disc? (with the Saltire on the other side)
'Chance' was a 12" clear (or very opaque white) disc

I also seem to remember having a Skids single, that had a sleeve that was a multi-page comic

Which reminds me, I've never owned a copy of this. A massive oversight on my part.

I've bought various bits of vintage vinyl from Discogs without issue... when they say it's 'mint' it's mint, when they say it's 'very good' it looks mint to me, even vinyl rated 'good' looks mint to me. Only ever had one issue with a Discogs seller and that some bloke in Bournemouth who turned out to be a lying twunt... and it was for a CD.
