To PC, I mean. Does anyone know of a way to do this without downloading one of the gazillions of bits of near-identical software, none of which seem to work for me (they all either freeze, or announce that if I want to save the messages rather than just read them, then I need to 'upgrade')?

Thx!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
For a single text the only way I found was to copy and paste the text into an email, which isn't helpful for several unless you're particularly bored.

I used to back 'em up to an XML file on the android and then copy that over to my lappy. I think I used to use SMS Backup & Restore, but it's weeks since I abandonded Android!

That sounds sensible, The issue I forgot to mention is that the reason I want to do this is because I have a new phone. And the reason that I have a new phone is because the old one is substantially farked. And because it is farked, is it almost impossible to install any new apps onto the phone.

I seem to remember linking my phone to my PC via USB and downloading from it as a mass storage device.

With the appropriate piece of software from the phone manufacturer loaded onto the PC I could back up everything to desktop.

I used to have to do it with my works HTC in case it ever went bang and I could copy it all onto a new phone.

Edit: although I suppose that relies on your new and old phones being from the same manufacturer.

Can you unpack the nature of the farkedness? As doing so may ease your pain... and provide useful insight into a potential solution...

When you buy your new phone, if it's compatible, you might be able to transfer your messages along with your contacts etc.
But you will need one of those nasty bits of software, probably.
