Always a tough one. In one hand you could have huge amounts of enthusiasm attached to a (percieved) steep learning curve and like you say, cheaper. But lack of experience and (possibly) social skills could count against.
The other option would certainly bring experience, but that could include 'baggage' in a negative context.
It's so hard to know what is right when the decision is based purely on an interview...
Tough one for sure.

interesting discussion… i'll let you know how the decision went.

during the interview, the penny seemed to drop that as i have graphic design skills (in addition to the skills required in the job spec), the owner could pass that occasional duty on to me, freeing him up to chase new business. if that's important, he may not want to have to take time out to mentor a graduate.

tbh the chap who's leaving was not a first-jobber, and having met him i doubt whether a first-jobber would be adequate replacement.

The most important "rule" for me is to try to find out whether anyone being interviewed is "needy", although doing that before or during an interview (or from references) is incredibly hard. It is usually not until a few months into a job that a person shows their true colours, sometimes it works out really well but when it goes wrong then it can go monumentally "tits up", and it is difficult to get rid of people even when they are obviously not competent (not so sure for smaller businesses buit it certainly is for local government).

Worked in your favour though.

Many years ago, I actually worked in a company where the HR man obviously went for the big tits policy.

The entire office was staffed with good looking women with big tits, great for a teenage lad like myself, but eventually there was a change at the top and the first person they then got rid off was the HR guy.

The only interview technique you require to hire new staff

Apologies in advance for this, but is this one of his interviews?

Depending on their skillset and my profit margins, the person with the most experience in the field. If there was nobody in the first round of CVs that fit that bill I'd look at graduates who could bring new experiences and ideas into the company.

they're still dithering, which makes me think it will be determined by a piece of business they expect to gain/not gain or lose/retain. not gain/lose, they'll have the time to mentor a graduate, win/retain, they'll need to hit the ground running with experience.

should know by week's end…

I would always employ some one with skills ,trade skills or soft skills, some one with fire in their belly goes the extra mile, some one that can up sell, makes the customer like them,a employee who considers them self to good, eye candy will not last 5 days with me, i have a small team round me most are f-ugly ,but do the job well and bend over backwards to get the work done with the customer coming first

If it wasn't for your punctuation, you'd get the job! ;)
