Had to collect my lad and his mate from their Scouts bike ride, other side of our town and into the country, got delayed so had to motor to get there on time, was on the Road Bike, it was warm, I felt good, bike felt good, clipped in, no wind (me or prevailing), flat tarmac, slight downhill, no traffic, no rucksack and I was going as fast as I possibly could to get there and for the hell of it, no speedo so I am not sure how fast but it felt good, no it felt great.

I happen upon another cyclist going slowly (relative to me), no time to warn of me approaching so, given it was clear I went right around on the other side of the road and didnt pay him any further mind (too busy), carried on for a mile or so arrived on time, stopped and waited as they were having a game of football, the lad on the bike I passed appears and I realised I knew him and he realised it was me who flew past, I took it as a backhanded compliment that he couldnt beleive it was me or how quickly I was going  he is now looking for a road bike to replace his MTB

It never usually happens like that, people you know usually see you when you are huffing up a minor hill, launching a Snot Rocket or pulling your bib shorts out of your arse crack and usually they are in a car, not usually when you are going faster than you have ever been on the flat before.

Only been overtaken once... and that was by Tharg when I was pootling along (doing about 17mph) in my own little world down towards Hulme bridge.

I glanced back approaching a zebra crossing (bit of a pinch point) and saw there was a cyclist catching me so just started to up the pace a bit without looking like I was trying to race them (well, it just won't do to be overtaken!!) when he came past shouting 'Morning!'.

I caught him up within about 100m and we continued together for the rest of the way.... it's difficult sometimes to keep the pace when you're by yourself and there are no cyclists ahead to aim for.

Also got scalped earlier this week* when I caught a cyclist up that I know from work. I dropped to her pace and we were having a chat when a bloke on a fixie stormed past... I was desperate to give chase, but managed to stop myself and persist with the slower pace and the chat... it was hard work though, ignoring the challenge!!!:tongue::tongue:

* This doesn't count as I was cycling with someone else at their pace. My excuse and I'm sticking with it. ;)

I saw the chap from Macc. Wheelers that I used to see all the time last year, today.

I was keen not to embarass myself, so sat in front, doing what I thought was a reasonable pace (Handforth to Cheadle). He went in front at Cheadle (good job really, as I was knackered by this point) and kept up what seemed to me to be a blistering pace whilst appearing to spin in an unruffled sort of a way 1-2 mph faster than me.

But I was wearing a rucksack, and it was heavy. And stuff.

Incidentally, our entire Bike to Work Day ride (10, maybe 12 cyclists) was passed by a fellow on a Brompton. The impulse to give chase was VERY strong.

Yeh, I was on the flippin front... and we were passed by a guy on a Langster that I absolutely scalp everyday (I'm usually at least 5mph quicker than him) but I always say hello....

JTM was covering the rear of the bunch, so could have gone for it, but I was on the front pedalling slowly on a 74" fixed gear...... and we had some totally new cyclists with us, so under strict instructions 12-15 mph absolute max with tail wind.....

Depending upon who is with the normal monthly rides, it's a sedate 17-20
