Scanned document question.

I scanned a letter from a HP "3 in 1" to my desk top. The type is very small so my idea was to open it in word or similar-highlight all the text-and increase the text size..........that was the theory. However I found that it will not allow me to highlight text or alter it in any way. It will only allow me to open it in programms such as 'paint' 'photoshop' or simply double click.
I checked 'properties' and it tells me its "jpeg" and opens with "unknown application".
I was able to open it in 'paint'.....copy & paste it into a word document and then enlarge to 150%.

So.......is there a simple way to scan a document so as to alter it?

You need to scan it & Ocr (optical character recognition) it but the accuracy isn't going to be 100%

When I scan it takes me through the stages but not any "options" (apart from cancell) and the result is what I have.
Where/what/how is the Ocr found or activated ?
I'm a techophobe and never heard of Ocr

There isn't a step.
You scan images and get image files not text files. You need "optical character recognition" software
Some printers may come with separate ocr software but otherwise you'll have to buy some yourself or possibly if you have office 2003 or later then in the office menu from the start button look under Microsoft Office Tools for Microsoft Office Document Imaging which will do what you want though only on tiff files which was the usual format generated by scanners but you can use Paint to save them as that format if your scanner does have format as an option.
If you don't have that tool then try freeocr

HP's sometimes come with iris. Try selecting scan to document if you have that option.

Our HP printers will always scan a doc to a *.jpg
If you want text then ocr software is required.

If you just want bigger text when scanned, scan at a higher resolution, the options will be in the "scan" window ... usually

Pat 5mph. It just doesn't give me any options.......I go to "my computer" click on 'scan' and it just goes thro set stages.

Numbnuts......I'm sure I have Abbeyfinereader......I've seen that option somewhere.....so I'll look at it

On a very similar topic - I would like to scan a form, and then complete it on the computer before printing it off.

So can I scan a document, then add words etc on the scanned document?

Paint allows you to create text blocks and select font and size for the text you wish to add so you can effectively draw your responses onto the documents
though depending on the quality of your scanner the end result may have fuzzy boxes and suchlike.

Thank you, I might try that. I do not think it matters about the boxes being a bit fuzzy.

Just tried again and-after starting the scanning 'steps' it askes me to select a programme to effect the scan........1 of the options offered is abbyfinereader. I can highlight this option but when I then click to continue the 'highlight' disappears.....as though it can't recognise it.
I assumed that, as it gave me that option, I had it on the computer-but maybe I haven't.

@speicher @dave7 like @ian turner said, you need to install the scanning software that came with your scanner. Or download the abby one @numbnuts mentioned (I'm trying out the new CChjat feature )
