I haven't owned a TV in years and my last TV had a CRT, so I'm somewhat out of the loop with modern televisual devices.

My parents bought a new TV as their old one had died. I sorted it out for them last weekend. As the new TV doesn't have a Scary socket, I was unable to connect the DVD player.

I see scary to HDMI cables on eBay. Is this all I need to make it work, or would it just be easier to just replace the DVD player as well? They don't seem to be too expensive these days and new ones list HDMI connections in their features.

Yes - I would get a new DVD player

Can they connect a laptop to it with an internal DVD in it - although that is rather "old" nowadays but you could repurpose an old laptop

but anyway - use pure HDMI if you can - converters can be a bit dodgy

I have a Scart HDMI lead on an old CD VCR combi and have had no problem with it You just need to make sure you get ones that pass a signal from the DVD rather than to the DVD.

A crazy option would be to buy a Playstation 5.

Some come with the blu ray player (that I presume plays CDs and DVDs), but I think it's cheaper to buy the console without a disc drive and then buy the drive for ~£60.

Plus you can play games on it, as well as get apps like YouTube; itvx; Prime Video; Netflix etc.

Often they have a Composite/Component Video socket.

Are you sure they still use the DVD? It probably has composite too, though scart to composite leads/ adapters are cheap on ebay.

I’d be surprised if the old dvd player does not have hdmi as dvd players are digital and scart is analogue? I would imagine it has both. I’d certainly m check this out before buying a new dvd player. If it does an hdmi cable is cheap as chips. Buy the cheapest one that is long enough as they’re all the same.

Maybe I better have a better look at the DVD player as I only peered in behind it and didn't notice one. It is a pretty old DVD player.

It does get used. All the box sets of classic comedies keeps my dad amused!

The "Scart is analogue and HDMI is digital" is why I would be worried about a converter - it is not just a matter of sticking a few wires into the right bits - it is totally different and needs something to translate

My neighbour had the same issue. Had to sort out his new TV and picked up HDMI lead only to find the DVD only had a Scart socket. The Scart to HDMI leads have a bit of electronics in them to make the signal compatible.

It might be a digital source when read off the disc but older players were designed to connect to older TVs, usually CRT. These are analogue and did not have a means to receive a purely digital video signal, hence the players convert to analogue internally.

There's an old DVD player connected to our little bedroom telly, it's got SCART and composite outputs, that's it.

Currently watching Taggart on a digital CRT.
Through a satellite box via scart lead.

I know. But I suspect the dvd has an hdmi out as well as scart. Tge scart was used for the old tv. The dvd may have scart only but Id check first.
