Schwalbe Marathon XRs

Following on from Stephen Jubb's thread these tyres are now unobtainable as all stocks have been bought.

What would it take to get Schwalbe to re-manufacture these tyres?

Sellers say that but in fact Schalbe used a 'the tread pays homage' marketing line.
It is a much lighter tyre which might in fact make it more appealing for some.

I bought two pairs of the XR last year knowing they were fast disappearing.

I Currently use XR.s most of the time now, as they have proved themselves very long lasting. having read the various reviews about the Marathon mondials when they first where introduced. They seem to be on a par with the XR.s but with less rolling resistance.

So technically worse? Surely the last thing you want riding a bike fully loaded is your tyres holding you back.

I don't find the XRs have that high a rolling resistance. I use 700C x 35 at 85 psi.

I can't find the replacement Mondials anywhere.

The XRs sold so well and were a touring/expedition cyclist's tyre of choice. If you have an excellent product that sells really well then why discontinue it? It doesn't make sense. Come on Schwalbe start remanufacturing the Marathon XRs!

The Mondial is aimed at the same expedition part of the market as the XR, with a similar tread pattern, but newer technology to make it lighter and faster rolling. It is made in 37-622 (= 700c/35). It is a bit early to say if Schwalbe have been successful in maintaining the XR's high mileage potential. Just give hem a try. Personally I would only use such robust tyres for pretty extreme trips.

I have a pair of XRs 700x35. I use one on the rear and a Specialised tyre 700x32 on the front, can't remember what model it is though. I wish I had bought a couple more pairs of the 700x35C XR as they are now NLA. It must have been about 12-18 months ago that I got them, from where I can't remember. It was on-line that I know.

I have a pair of XRs 26"x 2 inches which look full on expedition tyres for my MTB, which I am sure will be a little harder to push along, all that rubber, but easier than a nobbly tyre such as the Maxis that was originally on the bike and much longer lasting.

I also couldn't find any in this country at the time but have just purchased a set of 4 Mondials for our trip to Iceland this summer from Bike24 in Germany. Actually much cheaper than here in the UK as I now notice that SJS cycles have some in stock at £41.99 each. Mine were €37.90 (£30.28) and shipping was only € 5.95 (£4.75). Order was placed on Sunday night and I received them yesterday, 3 days from Germany isn't bad.

Speaking from just 1 puncture on the Cape Town tour (over 2 sets of tyres) the Schwalbe Marathon Plus or Marathon Plus Tour (Knobly sides) will always remain my choice.
Personally I think, on a fully loaded bike, rolling resistance between different tyres is of little consequence, especially on rough roads, of which includes some european tarmac roads with a graveled surface.

Wiggle or Chain Reaction sell them both for ~ £28.00.

I met a Dutch couple in Durness on Monday who had spent the last month touring the Highlands on Mondials. They looked very like XRs, and apparently they had survived the month on and off road puncture free.

Nice to hear. Mine get put to the test on Monday week. Should on gravel roads on day one. Will see how they go over 5,000 km including one on the trailer.
