I finally gave in earlier this evening and switched the heating on, telling myself that apart from the fact it was daft to sit there shivering, I do need to run it to check that everything's working.

Half an hour later, I switched it off again. That was two hours ago and it's still far too warm in here.

It's either going to be a cheap autumn or I've now tempted the fates and the heating will stop working in the midst of a prolonged Arctic spell and I'll need to be defrosted by getting into the bottom oven of an Aga, like we used to do with the orphan-Annie lambs.

I'm a firm believer in putting lambs in the oven. And potatoes.

I've resisted so far but I've had a log fire a couple of times, more for the cosy glow and the look of it. It's too bleedin' hot though so I end up sitting here, watching the TV in my underpants.
Pictures to follow....

How hot is your house??!!!

I can't stand it when the in-house temperature goes over 20 degrees, I have to open a window!

And I sleep all year round with a window open. I can't sleep in a room without fresh air. That has always been a bone of contention between me and the girlfriends I've had. I haven't yet met one who can see the sense in sleeping with a window open and the radiator off when it's -5 centigrade outside!

In fact, when my ex insisted that we turn on the radiator in my bedroom, it transpired that the thing had been off for so long that the valve was jammed shut. Hence I got to sleep in a lovely cold bedroom after all - despite her moaning how cold it was, "I'm still cold with pyjamas and bloody bedsocks, how the hell can you sleep in the damn nude?! ... By God, your skin is actually warmer than me! I'll need you as a hot water bottle then!" (It has its benefits)

MrsP has had the heating on for a couple of weeks now, just for a couple of hours in the evening as she really feel the cold :cold: , even when it is warm. Nothing above 20c in the house but it is far too warm for me. I sit out in the kitchen with the back door open and all the other doors closed so the heat stays in all the other rooms, but not the kitchen. I can't wait for next April or May when it can go off completely.

Not cold enough here yet for centrol heating, although the wife has had a blanket over her a couple of times in the evening, not a lover of to much heat in the house, don't think it does you a lot of good, you need a good bit of fresh air, i keep opening windows and the wife closes them,

I switched mine on for about 10 minutes earlier this evening just to test it was working fine. It has not gone cold enough for me to put the heating on fully, and by the looks of the forecast probably won't do for another week at least. I think this will be easily the latest in the year that I will put the heating on it's normal twice daily setting.

One issue I do have is that it has been horribly damp and gloomy the last week or so and as such, my house is getting a bit damp as well (I don't mean mildew or mould issues, I just mean high humidity). Any suggestions? Unfortunately I don't have a dehumidifier.

Recently had cavity wall and loft insulation sorted, the house is warmer i can tell, still got the heating on but much lower now.

must admit over the years my wife has made me nesh, i used to sleep all weathers with my window wide open sans heating in my room, now i'd prolly freeze to death if i did that. like i say nesh.

wouldn't mind the next house having a fireplace mind, have that instead of the central heating.
