Planing a cycle trip from Oban, island-hopping on the ferries. Possibly early Sept. Anyone know if this is a good time to go...I'd like to avoid the worst of the midges!

Also, what are people's experiences of flying with their bikes? I have never taken my bike on an aeroplane.

The downside will be the shorter daylight at that time of year. Regarding weather just be prepared for the worst and hope for the best, like any other time. Midgies are unlikely to be a problem.

Flying with bikes - I think it strongly depends on the line. I live in Canada and used BA and KLM to fly to UK - never had a problem taking my boxed bike (but last couple of years had to pay for it as for an extra piece of luggage as free baggage allowances went down from 2 to 1 piece). I would avoid any US airlines if at all possible.

It would be an internal UK flight.

Kirstie, great I hope you enjoy your trip. I toured last June starting from Ardrossan, doing Arran, Kintyre, Islay, Jura, Gigha and Bute.

We went up to mull at the end of july, we were really lucky with the weather sunshine all the way.

Fantastic cycling, beautiful countryside, stunning coastal and mountain views. The north end of the island has some great little hills, loads of hairpin bends where the Isle of Mull rally takes place, you also glimpse the mountains of Skye on a clear day.

There tended to be a bit of a sea breeze most days so midges didn't really factor in, bar the odd bite but that can happen anywhere right?

Hope you have a great time,

Just come back from Mull, Barra, the Uists, Harris, Lewis and Skye. Hardly saw a midge - one evening on Mull there were a few and one morning at the north end of Skye. September could well be very good.
