Absolutely, and they rose to a massive challenge time and again. I thought it a truly spunky performance and quite the kind of England team performance I could get excited enough about to watch again.

Do you think so? I thought we conceded all three goals because of hopeless naivety, and whilst we showed great spirit to get back in the game, that at least was partly due to playing with the freedom that comes with chasing a seemingly hopeless cause. It's quite possible that this team will develop and mature, but for me, the jury is very much out.

I agree - playing like that the team would be vulnerable to any half decent well organised and compact international team that was actually trying.
Yes there were encouraging signs but the value of that particular team going to the Euros would only be to get experience for the future (see Wales' policy).

That team won't be near the first choice at the Euros and a good few of those younger players will have a supporting role if their form persists through the season.

For the first time in years on Wednesday there was an England team playing to their actual potential - which is basically 7/8th in the world - and no pretence of any better.

I hope they keep faith with Psycho and he then develops a game plan around the fact that we have to employ a team structure to overcome the technical deficiencies.

That's how I saw it. Worth remembering that substantially the same Dutch team got a good drubbing from the Germans not so long ago.

And the Germans got beaten by France on Wednesday who we play 1st, without Rooney, in the Euros.

By all accounts France were very good!

Pearce does not want to be the permanent manager. He has offered to take the team to the Euros but said he'd want to return to the under 21's afterwards as he is not ready for the full job.

I think it's very hard to predict who's going to be a good international manager.

We tend to pick successful club managers, but the jobs are so different it rarely seems to work.

Harry Redknapp is almost certain to be picked - but one of his strengths is in the transfer market - even at Spurs he's made some amazing deals, like Van der Vart and Adabuyor.

You could argue the national coach should be someone with a knowledge of tournament football, man management and a global knowledge of the game, rather than day to day coaching and picking players.

Psycho might be better qualified having had a successful international career and been in charge of the under 21s for a while - so he'll know the young talent coming through worldwide and the way international teams set up.

Yep.
The 'experienced' England team won't do brilliantly in the Euros and won't be much fun to watch either.
The 'newbie' team will be more interesting to watch and follow and a great stepping-stone to develop a fresh England rather than the stale. I don't think we've much to loose frankly.
Pycho should remain for the forseable future.

I don't think we'll be any worse with the new team, but I don't think we'll be any better, either. Maybe, if we can keep the younger players together for a few years, they'll be a real force, but we said that about the so-called golden generation.

Let's not kid ourselves, England's measure of success in the Euros should be judged on whether or not they qualify from the group stage. That's about as far as they can go on ability, anything more will be a bonus. This tournament needs to be regarded as a building block for the future, not as an end in itself because no matter who is in charge we ain't gonna win it.

The old guard should go now because one they're not up to it, and two they have a disruptive influence on the rest of the squad because they massively over-rate their own importance.

IIRC, the newbie team has only been together a very short time, so they've potential to improve. The old stagers have been together for a long time and are only going to get worse. New broom time.
